Muslim Role Models Who Took Care of Themselves

Prophets & Companions Who Valued Cleanliness, Grooming, and Health
Think self-care is something new? Think again. Long before skincare routines and self-care trends, the greatest Muslim men — the Prophets and companions — were already setting powerful examples of hygiene, grooming, and looking after their health.
At Tayy Skin, we believe taking care of yourself isn’t just smart — it’s Sunnah. Let’s take a look at how our role models made self-care part of their faith and daily life.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: The Ultimate Example
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known for his personal hygiene and clean appearance. He frequently emphasized cleanliness and took great care of his body, hair, and clothing.
- He used the miswak (natural toothbrush) daily to clean his teeth and freshen his breath.
- He applied natural oils like olive oil and perfume (like musk) to his body and hair.
- He cared for his skin and hair — combing his beard and keeping his hair neat.
- He made wudu frequently, keeping his face, hands, and feet clean multiple times a day.
He once said: “Indeed, Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty.” (Muslim)
Looking good and feeling clean isn’t showing off — it’s following the Prophet ﷺ.
The Companions: Living the Sunnah
The Sahabah (companions) of the Prophet ﷺ followed his habits closely and took pride in cleanliness and grooming:
- Uthman ibn Affan (RA): Known for his modesty and always being clean. He would stay in wudu as much as possible.
- Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA): Practiced regular ghusl (ritual washing) and kept his appearance tidy.
- Abdullah ibn Umar (RA): Was known to use perfume and oil regularly and mimic every act of the Prophet ﷺ, including grooming habits.
They knew that caring for your body was a sign of respect — for yourself, for others, and for the blessings Allah gave you.
Islam and Self-Care: A Spiritual Connection
Self-care in Islam isn’t just about appearances — it’s about being mindful and respectful of your body, which is an **amanah** (trust) from Allah.
The Qur’an says:
"Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:222)
Caring for yourself is a way to show gratitude to Allah (swt) and reflect the inner beauty of faith outwardly.
Whether it’s combing your hair, trimming your nails, using natural products, or simply washing your face regularly — these small acts can be part of your deen and your routine.
Guys, don’t wait until your skin is breaking out or your hair is out of control. Follow the example of the Prophet ﷺ and the companions by taking pride in your appearance the halal way.
And remember — looking good isn’t about impressing others. It’s about honoring yourself and your Creator.
